Finding summer job will be hard work
Seattle Post Intelligencer – Apr 10, 2008
Economists predict that summer job seekers and college graduates will be entering into one of the most competitive job markets in recent years, pockmarked with rising unemployment rates and a shaky economic outlook. That, coupled with downward trends in youth employment historically, could spell a looming crisis for the country’s younger generations, said Kris Stadelman, CEO of the Seattle-King County Workforce Development Council. “For young people, I think it is going to remain tight for a while — that’s just simply the nature of our economy,” she said. “The only thing that would change that would be if the federal government suddenly cut off the flow of immigrants, since they often compete with young people. ”
But immigrants aren’t the only ones turning in applications for low-paying, service-industry jobs. College students home for the summer or recently graduated without job offers might be vying for those positions, too… Graduates with degrees in certain fields — health care, computer science and engineering, to name a few — will still be in high demand despite the faltering job market, experts agree. That’s a work-world fact that UW sophomore Josh Powell is well aware of as he starts searching for an internship in health care. “I would be more worried if I was going into real estate or accounting,” he said as he waited to have his resume reviewed at a university career-preparation event this week. Diane Martin, associate director of employer relations for the UW’s Career Center, said they’ve seen an increase in employers wanting to participate in career fairs, and postings on the university’s job site have almost doubled since last year. She attributes the still-positive college recruiting market to the fact that though layoffs are taking place, companies are still hiring in other areas. And that’s due in large part to retiring baby boomers, she said. “There’s a huge need to fill that void,” Martin said.
