CAREER INFO CRITICAL
Jamaica Observer, Jamaica
Golding said his view is based on the comments of youngsters with whom he has spoken, who seem to lack information about their chosen fields of study. “When you ask ‘why you chose this particular course?’ the reasons you get would amaze you,” the prime minister said of university students. He was speaking two Wednesdays ago at the launch of the Special Youth Employment and Training Project, a new programme that seeks to train and employ 10,000 unattached young people over the next four years. Golding noted that while some people with qualifications cannot find employment, vacancies in other fields went unfilled. “I don’t get a sense that people are selecting their pursuits with proper guidance. According to the U. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of clinical laboratory workers is expected to grow by 14 percent until 2016 – faster than all other occupations. The Medical Laboratory Assistant program offered through NTI provides its graduates employment options. Successful graduates of the program may also earn 3 separate national certifications, further boosting their employment opportunities. As the economy fluctuates and unemployment rises and falls, one thing remains constant: Those with job-specific skills are better able to weather the storms and get ahead during difficult times.

Your goal is to establish a reputation as a valuable employee who shows initiative, takes responsibility, and has brains, good judgment, and knows technology. Once you’ve done that you’ll be in a position to apply for internal opportunities in IT. You’re going to have to restart your career. It’s going to be a challenge. In particular, maintaining a positive outlook during what will be several years of underemployment will be seriously hard, as you see less-talented employees out-earning you and enjoying more prestige as they do. I don’t see any alternative, though. Perhaps other readers might, though, so keep an eye on the Comments.
