EMPLOYMENT: CASH AND RELEASE
Las Vegas Review – Journal, NV
Highly specialized workers might face a tougher time finding another job than lower-skilled workers would have, so companies will often offer buyout deals to higher-level people to smooth the transition into a new position. Still, buyouts carry their own risks, experts said. Companies offering buyouts could lose some of their best workers, because strong employees with the finest career possibilities are most apt to take the deal. Poorly performing staffers worried about their prospects on the job market are likelier to “hunker down” and stay put, Challenger said. Some companies maneuver around that problem by quietly telling their best workers that they’re needed long-term, and asking them to decline the buyout. There’s also legal precedent for companies denying an employee’s buyout bid if executives deem the worker critical to the operation’s day-to-day function. Weighing buyouts versus layoffs is a calculation more companies will find themselves making as the economy staggers along, Rhodes-Ford said.

Job agencies see their business boom

Dagoberto Paz, 45, was visiting the West Miami-Dade center on a recent Monday to search for work as a financial analyst. He has a master’s degree in business administration and 10 years of experience as a financial analyst for companies that include US Airways and Johnson & Johnson, but he was laid off in August. ”Right now it’s hard for everyone,” Paz said as he used a career center computer to aid in his job search. The employment agencies have more than a dozen offices throughout Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, where visitors can search for jobs, polish their résumés, take a class on interviewing, or sign up for job-training programs. The training programs focus on helping people with skills that are no longer in demand change careers to areas where job opportunities are growing. Urcuyo, an out-of-work electronics technician from Hollywood, is receiving retraining aid for certification in computer repair, a field with more job opportunities.
