Many who see the rising unemployment rate fear for their own job security. While itrsquo;s understandable to be concerned about employment there are steps workers can take to help them be more indispensable and ldquo;recession-proofrdquo; their career. Randy Wolf regional vice president of Robert Half International a staffing company in Chicago recently answered questions for The Times about how to keep your current job or look for a new job if you’ve been laid off. But we cannot fully reap the economic benefits of these wonderful programs until they are available to every student across the state. We need to get that message out especially to the 21000 Michigan students who drop out each year before even finishing high school. Many students and their parents don’t realize it’s increasingly impossible for workers without post-high school training to find good employment. We held a series of dropout hearings this year and one thing is clear: Any solution has to be multifaceted. Not every student learns in the same way so we must tailor our programs to reach every child. Our schools must provide specialized training that gives all students the skills they need but we also have to make what happens in the classroom relevant to students’ lives. At the dropout hearings employers told us schools must offer hands-on training in key areas like business medical and professional services creating a highly skilled work force.

Those temporary positions often lead to getting hired full time. “Our biggest fear” Whitmore said “is that there are people out there who don’t know what to do next and they don’t know that we are here.
