Unconscionable employment terms are unenforceable

The dollar clearly does not come close to reflecting the value of the automobile. The poor economy and tight job market make this topic very timely regarding employment terms; I have several friends who already worked large numbers of extra hours for which they were not compensated who are now putting in even more time to avoid a termination. I agree that everyone should be a good employee and make an honest effort but think as well that many employers are taking undue advantage of the poor economy; some companies are even reminding the professionals who are allowing them to keep their doors open that the current job market has resulted in many qualified people applying for their positions. Requiring that employees do much more than the nature of their employment and compensation should require is simply mean and can be considered unconscionable. The job market does largely control wages but the minimum wage law reflects the interest in the government that comnpensation be reasonable. Part of being a professional is not running out the door the second that your work day is over and may also involve a fair amount of extra hours but an employer simply cannot enforce an employment contract if he or she piles an undue amount of work onto an employee or makes a workplace unduly hostile. Employers should remember too that basic management principles show the importance of treating good employees well and not threatening to replace them.
