That’s right almost all of the class is working in private-sector jobs good jobs with a future. PRIME or Providing Real Incentives to Maintain Employment was launched in July 2008 to help Rochesterians get beyond those obstacles. It helps participants develop work skills create records of employment and search for long-term careers with area employers. We recently marked the successful completion of two classes. We work with community-based organizations law enforcement neighborhood groups and individuals to identify people who are underskilled undereducated re-entering society looking for a career or having difficulty finding and keeping employment. Annually Rochester deals with the vast majority of Monroe County’s 2500 ex-offenders who need sustainable employment to care for themselves and their families. Ex-offenders and school dropouts receive special attention because they often have the most difficult time finding jobs.

Armed with pens pencils clipboards and business cards — and their anxieties about the future — the unemployed workers whose occupations varied widely from dance instructor to tech support spent more than an hour at lunchtime at the Bedford Street Diner here discussing their goals and their many frustrations. Lou Winington 36 from Monroe told the group he had been laid off twice from human relations positions in the past three months. Leila Dreskin 24 of Stamford said she thought she had finally found steady employment as an actuary with a major corporation after years of working at low-paying and hard-to-keep positions as a dance teacher only to be laid off in the fall. Kenneth Lee who had worked in information security at I. said he has been searching for a job for more than a year and interviews had all but dried up in the past two months.

“If I find the right position I’m gone tomorrow” she said. She is among the many job seekers who don’t need to hear unemployment statistics to know these are tough times. At the West xnard Job & Career Center and Employment Development Department a line often forms outside before the office opens at 8 a. It makes finding parking difficult. Phyllis Dobbins a career specialist supervisor attributed the daily crowds to an increase in the number of people requesting extensions to their unemployment benefits. “This place has been pretty packed” she said.
