State’s unemployment fund runs out of money

According to the Employment Development Department the state pays about $30 to $34 million a day in unemployment benefits. It will have to rely on a $2 billion federal loan to get through March. The problem lies in not enough revenue going into the program and too many checks going out. Action News talked with a spokesperson for the EDD who says nonetheless unemployment checks will be honored. Carrina Hanson has been on the job hunt for about two months.

“How many stories like that are there?” he asks. Whittingham says he always wanted a career in the arts but growing up in New York he “had to know what [Wall Street] was all about. ” The big-bank experience made him more well-rounded he says adding: “My artist friends thought I was crazy. His two internships were the most lucrative jobs he had ever held he says. “Very quickly I saw the difference between a life busing tables or what my mom had made” as a special-education teacher he says. The three friends are still in touch a year and a half after their internship.

Career center big hit among college students

As the two services were previously located in different buildings on campus the merger combines their services in one location. The Center is now located in the Math Science and Technology center at Aquinas Hall. The Career Center offers services like resume and cover letter preparation and interviewing strategies for students as they seek to obtain paid co-ops and internships related to their majors before graduation and post graduation employment. The Center also offers career counseling and job search assistance for both students and alumni and sponsors events including salary negotiation workshops etiquette dinners social networking workshops and a campus-wide employment fair. College President Fr. Kevin Mackin said that the location of the new Career Center will allow students more access to its services. “I’m really delighted about the location of the career center because we’re here really for the students and of course after four years of college education you are looking for a job and the career center is I really think in the middle of student traffic” he said.
