After 35 years in manufacturing – the last 13 as a packing supervisor at a jewelry and souvenir company – Platt lost her job last February. She looked for seven months for work in her industry to no avail. Realizing she needed to change careers the 53-year-old signed up in late November for retraining at her nearby state-run employment center netWRKri in the customer service and call center fields. The four-week certificate courses paid for with funds from the federal Workforce Investment Act taught her how to use a computer take calls and resolve complaints. "I don’t think I could get another job without retraining" said Platt. "My job was in manufacturing and there just aren’t any manufacturing positions around. "As the national unemployment rate soars retraining is becoming increasingly popular.

"[There's] a wide range of companies and organizations that are in the agricultural industry and they’ll be coming and looking for full-time employees and interns" said Mary Ellen Barkley assistant director of Career and Employment Services. Barkley who is the liaison to the College of Agriculture and Human Ecology said this is the third year for the fair. With more than 70 companies coming this year CES has been planning diligently to make this year’s fair a success. Though the title of the event might seem geared toward students in agricultural fields Barkley is encouraging every student to attend the fair. "There are opportunities for students in other areas as well" she said.

Jeff Hentschel a spokesman for the state labor office said the department handled 479959 regular and extended claims during 2008 and the number of new persons filing for jobless benefits has risen every week so far in 2009. The state has added 75 employees to its employment offices but Mr. Neeley said they are still struggling to keep pace with the growing number of layoffs and requests for extended jobless benefits.
