Those are things that you can’t take for granted that someone necessarily possesses as a career manager. ” Yet some self-employed professionals say independence is worth that challenge. “It is an enormous change” said Gary Rich a former human resources executive and founder of Rich Leadership an executive coaching firm. “All of the structure in your world goes away” along with features like a tech help desk he said. “But I’d rather be on the phone here at home with Dell trying to decipher why my computer sounds like a garbage truck than sitting on the 33rd floor of a building in New York writing memos.

Internships traditionally provided a supervised learning experience in a chosen field while studying and a ticket to a first paying job with an employer after graduation. Now some financially pressed students like Dunn settle for paid internships that don’t serve their goals. “There are industries that are exploiting students” said Trudy Steinfeld executive director of NYU’s Wasserman Center for Career development which manages the school’s internship programs. Steinfeld said the media and brokerage firms are among those using unpaid interns sometimes with the promise of future jobs. “They always had paid internships” said Steinfeld referring to the brokerage firms. “All of a sudden in this economy there are big-name firms saying ‘if you want into this business you’ll have to work for free doing cold calling’” he said. “Cold calling” in this case is solicitation for brokerage clients from massive lists of telephone numbers.

At the very least you know someone hovering on the edge between employment and uncertainty. My in-box is filled with frantic notes résumés and networking requests from contacts and strangers many formerly in high-level positions. Unfortunately when our careers hit a road bump or when we fear turbulence ahead we tend to act in ways that may harm us in the long run. Some of us might be swayed by job opportunities outside our expertise or below what we’re capable of — anything to keep those paychecks coming. The trouble is when we make moves based on fear or desperation we often become mired in jobs we never wanted.

Community members and students had a chance to meet with about 70 employers at the 25th annual Career Expo to learn about internship employment and networking opportunities. “It’s increasingly important in these economic times to have options” said Lisa Toomey CBC special projects director. Looking for a job in this economy can be challenging but some at the expo made it even more so by presenting their skills in a “60-second commercial. ” The 14 candidates presented live resumes before an audience of employers. “The live resumes prepare the seeker for the ‘Tell me about yourself’ question” said Daphne Lightfoot director of student employment.
