students” in yesterday’s University section painted an unrepresentative picture of the New Jersey Career Day held last Friday in the Rutgers Student Center on the College Avenue campus. Having worked at The Daily Targum personally we’re sure it wasn’t the writer’s fault for trying to accentuate the positive nature of a “University” event. Even so there are some grievances that deserve attention. Given that a majority of the companies that attended were only catering to those who are majoring in economics or in the business school the idea of a diverse job market in the year 2009 should not be sensationalized and the statement from the article that “companies are still hiring” was simply erroneous.

“I would like to see more utilization of the services. There is a lot we provide that students do not know about” Director Steve Gregory said. Another part of Career Services is the administering of student employment and keeping the job postings current and updated. There are nearly 800 applicants each semester. Interested in on-campus employment? Stop by and fill out an application. Job postings can be viewed on the website or on their bulletin board outside the office. The office is certainly a place to visit at least once a semester.

The follow-up of graduates for this report began at graduation. Seniors completed a “Graduate Information Form” during the check-out process during final examination week. Using the contact information the seniors provided on the form the Career Center staff maintained contact with graduates seeking employment through spring summer and fall. The survey provides a “snapshot” in time in the lifelong career development of graduates. Their status at the time of the survey is a reflection of the roles they are playing and their decisions on what is best and rewarding for them.
