She works for Pacific Associates a partner in the public WorkSource system. It’s not as simple as plucking a career from the in-demand list though she said. There need to be some transferrable skills from one’s old career. That’s where state-provided employment specialists come in — they can help people figure out their skills for free. Department of Labor also maintains a Web site.

Brassington who lives in Brooklyn has been unemployed for about a year ever since she was laid off from a job as a legal administrator. Some consulting work in the meantime has kept her afloat. But Brassington says she’s exhausting every option including visiting several employment agencies and attending career events. “The market is so bad right now there are so many people looking for work — you just go wherever you have to go” she said. Kevin Greene 37 says he had reservations about attending an event geared toward women but he’s ready to try just about anything to get his face in front of a potential employer. “It’s so hard to get to talk to people face-to-face when you’re looking for work but it’s so important” Greene said. “Anything to avoid the black hole of e-mailing a resume.

Hosted by The hio State University at Marion and Marion Technical College the event featured more than 50 employers available to talk with potential employees as well as a panel of employers providing free job-seeking advice and answers to audience questions. Thomas Hall nodded in agreement about the frustration of graduating last August with a bachelor’s degree in finance while jobs in his field appeared to be few. A month after he graduated the stock market collapsed under the weight of toxic debt incurred by some of the nation’s largest financial institutions. Hall had a seat near the front row serving an internship with Merrill Lynch which became part of Bank of America a month after he graduated.

“ne of the goals is to facilitate a career day at our middle junior high and high schools each year” Vicks said. “Last year we did one at Triad High School (in Troy) and it was very successful. “Vicki Niederhofer a labor market economist with the Illinois Department of Employment Security said that career fairs are an opportunity to teach young people that no matter what occupation they choose their education is important. “It further helps to emphasize the importance of education beyond high school and the different paths for college and technical programs” Niederhofer said. Montgomery said that the career fair was a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn and begin looking forward to high school. She said that the students and their parents were invited back on Tuesday night for a family night. She said the event is meant to inform parents about career options and encourage students’ career and educational interests.

1 percent in December the state’s Employment Security Department reported Tuesday in another sign of the deepening recession. In January an estimated 303570 people were jobless and looking for work in Washington – the largest number ever in the state. “These are rough times for the unemployed but it’s also an opportunity to get some training for a new career” said Employment Security Commissioner Karen Lee. The biggest declines were seen in manufacturing information services construction motor vehicles and parts dealers and truck transportation. Washington's January unemployment rate of 7. 8 percent was higher than the national unemployment rate of 7.
