January’s job losses marked the 12th straight month of declines and brought the state’s unemployment rate to 7. 3 percent highest since September 1993. All of the month’s losses were in the private sector 9300 as public employment rose by 400. Losses were biggest for professional and business services manufacturing and financial activities. Private-sector employment is its lowest since September 1999. ver the course of 2008 public employment in New Jersey rose by 3000 as a 9600 employee rise among local governments offset losses at the state and federal levels. The biggest declines were in transportation business services and manufacturing.

Now some Hong Kong landlords are demanding three months’ security from bankers instead of the usual two because of the risk the prospective tenants may be laid off. Since business is so slow financial sector recruiters have begun scheduling long vacations. Local banks in Asia unlike European banks have had fewer layoffs as a percentage of total employment because they largely avoided buying American securities in the last few years. But they have never employed large numbers of expatriates. Many expats return home after losing their jobs. Some seeing the writing on the wall are even walking away from high-paying high-pressure jobs. When David Flynn for example moved to London from Australia four years ago he loved being part of a bustling financial center ripe with career opportunities and fat bonuses.

Atotal of $250000 is being made available statewide to Workforce Investment Boards that serve rural counties in New York. The money comes from federal funds allocated to New York State under the Workforce Investment Act. The cards are intended to help the unemployed with transportation expenses as they look for work go to job interviews or use employment services available at their local ne-Stop Career Center. The face value of a card will vary by area but is expected to be in the vicinity of $25 to $50 each. Cards will be available from now until either June 30 or when funds run out. “The latest unemployment numbers in New York are at a historic high and we have yet to see the bottom of this economic crisis. Every bit of extra help is important to unemployed New Yorkers in these tough times” said Governor Paterson.
