Many Wisconsin farmers forced to find new careers

Career counselors many of them farmers or ex-farmers fanned out across the state and offered assistance in subjects ranging from landing a job interview to dealing with the emotional trauma of losing a farm. f the 2500 farmers who went through the program 80% found off-farm employment and 90% remained on the job six months or longer according to Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development. "Most of the folks continued to live on their farm. They just didn’t use it as their primary income anymore" said Kathy Schmitt a Wisconsin Farm Center community relations specialist. Some farmers have lost the jobs they trained for including a Boyceville police officer laid off this month because of budget cuts. That shouldn’t discourage others from trying to switch careers especially if they’re at risk of losing their farms to foreclosure.

The DL said Florida would receive more than $165 million of such funding. “In his recent address to the nation President bama asked every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. “This significant investment in employment and training presents a tremendous opportunity for workers and employers across the country.

To those who turned out Saturday finding a job would be a home run. Companies taking part included Coca-Cola Lowe’s and Union Bank. And government agencies including the FBI the Social Security Administration and the Army Corps of Engineers were there too. All had one thing in common: They were hiring.
