Another of the center’s programs Make It a Four-Year Process is a major part of making sure students take advantage of the Career Center’s services. The process starts before a freshman starts classes in the fall and continues until graduation. According to a checklist pamphlet students should register with Student Employment and begin using CAREERlink a Web site for employers to post available positions to help students find part time on or off campus jobs freshman year. Students should also visit career fairs their freshman year Waggoner said.

“Because of the economic situation of the trades the job market for my kids is pretty much hurting right now and that’s due to the economy” said Pete Catan Woodstock High School’s building trades instructor. The housing and auto downturns that have left many Americans out of work have put recent graduates looking for employment in these industries in a challenging situation. “The biggest competition these kids have right now is their parents – it’s the generation ahead of them who is currently out of work” said Joel Green director for the McHenry County Cooperative of Employment an organization that coordinates career and technical education with area high schools. “When you look for a product you look for someone with a track record; that’s the issue these kids are going to face. They’re up against people who have a history of doing good work” Green said. Not only are the trade industries themselves facing tough economic times but high school vocational programs also are dealing with smaller budgets. “A lot of this is banked on state funding and that is one thing that is lacking right now” Catan said.
