At least 54 companies are part of Mayor Ballard's “Indianapolis Employment pportunities 2009 Career Fair. ” Those businesses have an estimated 1150 jobs available. More than a third of the people who pre-registered for the career fair fall into the “45 and older” category. They've been hit hardest by the job loss they are followed by the 35-45 crowd. “I just lost my job a week ago.

The event is from 8:45 a. to noon and includes a hot breakfast and a raffle for a free iPod. The session will feature a panel of young people who left school before graduation and later returned for their diploma or GED and are now employed or enrolled in post-secondary education or training.

When she finishes her course Mycroft hopes to secure full-time employment with one of the organisations she has worked with or another naval architecture employer. Summer clerkships have long been a stepping stone into employment in law but in recent years internships of up to three months’ full-time work during university holidays have become commonplace in many industries including accounting engineering science media and IT. Lene Jensen head of careers and employment at the University of NSW says employers offer work placements (usually paid at a percentage of a starting graduate’s salary) as a way of identifying the best talent in the graduate pool. Consequently getting a placement has become extremely competitive. “I was speaking to a student who said she had done her psychometric test her first and second interview and she was on to her interview with a firm’s partners. This wasn’t to get a permanent role it was just to get a holiday job” Jensen says. “And on top of that the student is effectively on probation the whole time.
